New Navy Enlisted Classifications

Background

Around 2017-2018, the US Navy appears to have re-vamped their Navy Enlisted Classification (NEC) system. They may have modified officer classifications as well??

For Nuclear Field (NF) sailors, this prompted a switch from 4-digit NECs to alphanumeric NECs. There are several new NECs which do not have an equivalent in the previous system.

Summary of the new scheme

NXXX - Nuclear Community & Career Field: 

N___ - 'N'-prefixed NECs (post 2018):

 1__ - Submarine
 2__ - Surface (former 338_/339_ NECs)
 _3_ - ET
 _4_ - EM
 _5_ - MM
 _6_ - MM(ELT)
 __T - Trainee
 __X - Not currently assigned to a 'NF' position
 __O - Operator
 __S - Supervisor ('senior nuclear billets')
 __Z - Supervisor / Manager (?)
 3_Z - Supervisor
 30Z - Nuclear LCPO CIN: A-661-0030 (no legacy equivalent)
 31Z - RDMC

NEC format

Each NEC is composed of four characters:

  • First, the letter N
  • Second, a single digit from the following list: 1-3,5,7-9
  • Third, a single digit from the following list: 0-9
  • Finally, a single letter from the following list: O,S,T,X,Z

Some NECs supersede each other:

  • i.e. N32Z (A submarine 'EDMC') will no longer have a `N30Z`

Notes

  • Some NECs require a particular training course (with a corresponding 'CIN')
  • Other NECs are assigned based on shipboard qualifications
  • Some training courses still do not have a corresponding NEC
  • The NECs may sometimes be listed following a rating, e.g. ETN-N23O
