(total available from electric appliances will be limited to some fraction of the total kW-h usage of the home)
  • Refrigerators / freezers
  • Dryer exhaust (also contains humidity)
  • Ventilation systems (range vent hood, bathroom, etc.)
  • Computers and other electronics
  • Waste water from showers, bathtubs, and dishwashers
  • Other motors
  • Dehumidifiers
  • Emergency generator exhaust
  • Household battery systems
  • Electric vehicle charging

  • Furnaces and air conditioners / heat pumps

Heat consumers

  • Domestic water heating
    • Bathing, handwashing, dish washing, clothes washing
  • Clothing dryer intake
  • Walkway / driveway / roof snow melting
  • Food cooking (ovens, ranges; gas or electric)

Sources of heat

  • Solar radiation (via thermal or electrical panels)
  • Solar radiation (on outdoor hardscapes, such as driveways or walkways)
  • Attic air

Sources of cold / possible heat sinks

  • Incoming potable water (from city system or well)
  • Rainwater / sump pump water
  • Underground earth / groundwater
  • Nighttime radiation into space (on clear nights)
  • Defrosting freezers

Sources of cold ~and~ heat

  • Outdoor air (depending on time of day / season)
  • Groundwater
  • Waste water drains (from sinks and toilets)
  • Indoor air (via HRVs/ERVs)
